Stagecoach announced today (27 January 2005) a major boost to public transport links between Oxford and Cambridge with express coach departures set to run every 30 minutes between the two cities.

Stagecoach announced today (27 January 2005) a major boost to public transport links between Oxford and Cambridge with express coach departures set to run every 30 minutes between the two cities.
The frequency of services on the X5 route has been doubled and a £1million investment is being made in refurbished coaches to boost comfort for passengers.
Stagecoach is also making it easier for customers to travel by making a proportion of seats on X5 services available online through the highly-successful megabus.com website, with prices from just £1 plus booking fee.
Passenger volumes on the X5 - which also links Biscester, Buckingham, Central Milton Keynes, Bedford and St Neots - have been growing at an annual rate of around 7-8%.
Twelve months ago, Stagecoach increased the frequency on certain sections of the route and there has been continuing high demand at morning and late night peak times.
There is no direct rail link between Oxford and Cambridge and the X5 service has grown rapidly to now carry more than 350,000 passengers a year.
Inglis Lyon, Managing Director for Stagecoach East, said: “This investment is tremendous news for people in Oxford and Cambridge, as well as a host of locations in between.
“Around eight years ago there were virtually no public transport links between these two historic cities and even now there is no direct train service, so this is a significant improvement. We are investing now for further growth in the future.
“megabus.com has shown there is a great demand for inter-city travel booked online and we are expecting a rush for our great value £1 tickets.”
The improved X5 services will start running from 30 January, but customers can start booking seats online from today (27 January 2005) at www.megabus.com.
A total of 15 refurbished coaches, each fitted with a toilet, will operate on the route.
