Demand for low-cost travel spurs $60 million bus purchase (Oct 10, 2008)

Due to passenger demand and a 219 percent growth in the last year, megabus.com, an express bus service with fares as low as $1, has purchased 96 double-decker buses to be added to their routes in the Midwest and Northeast October 2008 through August 2009.
“Based on the overwhelming popularity of our service and our commitment to provide an affordable travel alternative, megabus.com has invested in 96 new touring double-decker buses, in an effort to meet the expanding customer demand,” said Dale Moser, president and COO of megabus.com.
The 81-passenger, 13.1 feet high, double-decker buses offer a panoramic view and are equipped with comfortable reclining seats with safety belts, reading lamps, power outlets, free WiFi, restroom and are ADA accessible.
The double-decker, which is designed with the latest technology available, also provides significant environmental benefits. Each new double-decker bus has the potential to remove 81 automobiles from the highway and is among the most energy and fuel efficient way to travel. According to Moser, the double-decker is 10 times more efficient than a 737 airplane and 25 times more efficient than a single-passenger car per passenger per mile.
Specifically the megabus.com double-decker’s fuel consumption per passenger per mile is .002 gallon, a 737 is .02 gallon and a single-passenger car is .05 gallon.
